Our Young Champions
Placing young people at the heart of the organisation is an important part of The Black Curriculum’s mission to equip young people with a sense of identity, and the tools to navigate a diverse landscape.
Completing the National Ambassador Scheme is not only a great way to develop yourself in the arts, but it also gives you an opportunity to become a Young Champion.
Many of our Young Champions went through the National Ambassador Scheme and have gone onto our amazing opportunity of becoming a Young Champion for The Black Curriculum.
The TBC Champions 1 year programme provides a vehicle for young people 16-24 to ensure that their voices are heard. The Champions will lead change to embed Black history in the English national curriculum and across the UK.
Role of a Young Champion
Who Are The TBC Young Champions
A dynamic team of students aged 16+. They are passionate about education and Black British history. They take part in a number of different paid projects, work together to tackle education barriers within society and support TBC to represent the voices of young people across the UK.
What Do The Young Champions Do?
They actively engage in creating and promoting educational content
They attend events with a similar cause to TBC, in order to network and spread awareness of TBC
By leveraging social media, community outreach, and educational initiatives, they mobilise the campaign across digital platforms
They engage in public speaking and delivering of presentations across organisations and schools
They work together to collaborate with external organisations
The Purpose of The Young Champions
The Young Champions serve as an extension of The Black Curriculum which is dedicated to driving the mission of decolonising the national curriculum and advocating for Black History to feature in the curriculum 365 days a year. With their experience as young people, they support the aim of the spreading awareness of TBC's mission on a grassroots level among their peers who are their age, in order to keep the legacy and message of TBC thriving through generations

Achievements
The first cohort of Young Champions (December 2023) have spent the first half of 2024 working on the creation of The Black Curriculum's third edition of their Zine. This Zine was built around the celebration of cultural food. The Young Champions looked at African and Caribbean heritage through the medium of food and they used different mediums to express their findings.
The Zine has a range of content, from interviewing notorious guests who are prominent in the food industry to intricately detailed recipes for making cultural cuisines. Young Champions developed their skills on Canva as they put together the entire Zine manually.
With the help from partners at Papier, they learned professional graphic design and they were able to bring their vision to life via intentional illustrations.
To applaud their hard work, The Young Champions presented at TBC's 5th anniversary launch, to finally celebrate the publication of their zine.
